University Program

HAC-Haiti’s service and study experience integrates the study abroad academic experience with a service experience. It provides students with a background in Haiti’s rich history and culture while introducing them to international community development work. Students get the rare experience of living and working with an international NGO while engaging with the community and learning about an underrepresented country.
Students find themselves being challenged personally and professionally. Students are given the opportunity to learn, not through classroom instruction, but through meeting professionals working in the field and interacting with communities by providing service. They collect knowledge on the countries history and culture, not through books, but through hearing first hand the experience of individuals who are living through it.
A key component to our service and study program is the integration of reflection into the academic experience. HAC-Haiti staff meets with students daily providing a structured space for students to ask questions and make connections that will provide students with deeper insight into complex social issues that affect the country. The reflecting sessions challenge student’s perceptions about themselves and world.
