School Benches

We currently do not have enough school benches for the children to sit on and learn. Students are forced to sit 5-6 on a bench intended for three, with the lack of benches some students have to sit on the concrete floor. With so many hardships for our children to overcome in attaining an education in Haiti we believe that having proper benches and desks is essential for facilitating learning and keeping our students in school.

Your contribution of $130 USD will provide one custom built school bench seating 4 students.

Goat Husbandry

A $60 gift to our goat husbandry program can give a family a female goat which will greatly assist in meeting the economic needs of a rural Haitian family.

Through our GAP, Goats Advancing People, program we provide the gift of one goat as a sustainable way to help struggling families in the rural communities we serve.  Each goat costs $50 USD and the addition of $10 provides much needed vaccinations and veterinary care for the new goat. Families continue to breed goats for food and to sell for additional income.  They are then required to gift two goats back into the program to be redistributed to other families in need, helping to keep the program self sustainable and reach more families throughout the community.

School Lunch Program

Malnourishment is a chronic problem faced by Haitian students, and one that we see frequently in our own classrooms.  Malnourishment effects health and cognitive function, and this has a long-term effect on a child’s ability to access education. It is estimated that 3.8 million Haitians suffer from food insecurity.  Providing school lunches for students not only is a gift to students who may be receiving their only meal of the day, but also has a number of other benefits.

Providing meals to students through feeding programs at schools can increases attention span and concentration, decrease drop out rates and absenteeism, and encourage parents to continue to send their children to school.

At Ecole Shalom, we strive to provide our students with the best education possible, and for many, such an education is unfeasible with out meal supplementation.

HAC-Haiti is currently dependent on individual donations to fund the school-feeding program, and has not yet met the total needed to provide meals for our students this year. In previous years students at Ecole Shalom were provided a free vegetarian lunch during school hours. With the recent addition of our after school program, this meal has become even more essential for our students to maintain energy and concentration throughout the school day.

Bathrooms

This year many of HAC-Haiti’s programs have expanded and increased enrollment. We currently have over 250 primary school students, over 170 English program students, 30 adult literacy program participants, 80 women’s group members, 40 men’s group members, and over 750 microloan recipients.  We are thrilled and excited for the increase in our programs and the number of community members who seek training, economic empowerment, and utilize our community center as a safe space and social hub from which to spread education and awareness. Yet, we realize that with over 1,300 individuals using our building on a weekly basis we are in desperate need of toilets and a sanitation system.  Individuals currently attending school, trainings, and meetings at the community center are forced to use the bathroom outside in the open due to lack of resources and available bathrooms.

HAC-Haiti has started to build four new environmentally friendly toilets for our program participants. Each bathroom will be equip with a dry composting toilet, be separated male and female, and have a communal sink available for hand washing. To help support this important project add this item to your donation cart. We ask that support come in $100USD increments.  Our partner organization PROViDE will be matching funds up to $2,000 in efforts to get the project completed by the holidays.
