Malnourishment is a chronic problem faced by Haitian students, and one that we see frequently in our own classrooms. Malnourishment effects health and cognitive function, and this has a long-term effect on a child’s ability to access education. It is estimated that 3.8 million Haitians suffer from food insecurity. Providing school lunches for students not only is a gift to students who may be receiving their only meal of the day, but also has a number of other benefits.
Providing meals to students through feeding programs at schools can increases attention span and concentration, decrease drop out rates and absenteeism, and encourage parents to continue to send their children to school.
At Ecole Shalom, we strive to provide our students with the best education possible, and for many, such an education is unfeasible with out meal supplementation.
HAC-Haiti is currently dependent on individual donations to fund the school-feeding program, and has not yet met the total needed to provide meals for our students this year. In previous years students at Ecole Shalom were provided a free vegetarian lunch during school hours. With the recent addition of our after school program, this meal has become even more essential for our students to maintain energy and concentration throughout the school day.
